River Bollin, Styal Country Park. The diverse 3.4 mile trail blends the industrial heritage of Quarry Bank Mill with the modern spectacle of Manchester Airport. The moderate walk typically takes around 90 minutes, leading you through the ancient woodland of the Bollin Valley and along the riverbanks. The terrain is often rugged, featuring steep climbs, uneven paths, and many steps that can become quite muddy after rain.
Planespotters at Manchester Airport. A major draw for many is the section of the path that runs alongside the airport perimeter, providing a unique vantage point for watching planes take off and land. Despite its popularity, several key parts of the route, including the Giant's Castle Bridge, have faced indefinite closures due to structural damage, so it is vital to check the National Trust’s latest access updates before setting off.
Quarry Bank Mill in Styal Country Park. Most visitors begin at the Quarry Bank Mill car park or near Styal station, taking advantage of the facilities at the National Trust site or the Ship Inn in the village. Given the current closures, the route often requires back-tracking or following temporary diversions through the woods rather than completing the traditional loop.
