The Causeway Romsey

0.4 miles (0.6 km)

The Causeway in Romsey is a historic private road and public footpath that runs alongside a main branch of the River Test, connecting Middlebridge to the picturesque Sadler's Mill. This stretch of pathway is one of the town’s most beloved walking spots, offering some of the few accessible views of the riverbanks near the town centre.... Though the riverside section is only about 300 yards long, it forms a vital link in a popular circular route that leads visitors from the heart of Romsey through the War Memorial Park and past the historic Romsey Abbey.
Historically, the Causeway and the adjacent mill belonged to the Spursholt estate rather than the Abbey, and were later absorbed into the vast Broadlands estate in 1745. For generations, the area near Sadler's Mill was a major local attraction where crowds gathered every autumn to watch salmon leap up the mill race on their journey upstream to spawn. While changes to the water flow in the 1990s altered their route, the Causeway remains a tranquil beauty spot characterised by its clear chalk stream waters and a variety of trees like willow and horse chestnut that overhand the path

These works included the installation of timber-clad barriers and new bridges over spillways to protect nearly 200 nearby properties from flooding. Most recently, in late 2025, the path was temporarily closed for resurfacing by the Town Council to ensure it remains a smooth and safe route for the many residents and tourists who use it for daily strolls.
