Webbers Post to Dunkery Beacon Walk
8 miles (12.9 oth km)This circular walk visits Dunkery Beacon from the Webber's Post car park in Exmoor.
The walk starts from the viewpoint and car park at Webber's Post and heads south through the peaceful Horner Woods where you can look out for a variety of wildlife.
Reaching the summit of Dunkery Beacon, at 1,705 feet, rewards you with some of the most extensive views in the South West.... Beside the massive Bronze Age stone cairn, you can enjoy a 360-degree vista that spans across the Bristol Channel to the Welsh coast, over the rolling hills of Exmoor, and as far as Dartmoor and Bodmin Moor on a clear day. The descent provides a new perspective on the steep, wooded combes below, ensuring the landscape remains visually striking throughout the return journey to Webber's Post.
The area is a prime location for observing Exmoor's most iconic wildlife in their natural habitat. You may encounter herds of wild red deer grazing along the slopes or moving between the wood’s edge and the open hill. The moorland is also home to hardy Exmoor ponies, which are frequently seen near the summit and help maintain the delicate balance of the heathland. Above the slopes, you might hear the song of skylarks or catch a glimpse of buzzards soaring over the valleys.
