West Bay to Golden Cap Circular Walk

This walk takes you from West Bay to Golden Cap on the Jurassic Coast. The route heads west from West Bay along the coast path to Seatown before climbing to Golden Cap.... You then follow a circular walk around the estate to Stonebarrow Hill and Chardown Hill. The route then returns to West Bay on alternative inland paths visiting Lower Eype on the way.
The walk combines dramatic cliff scenery with sweeping inland views across the rolling countryside of the Marshwood Vale. Leaving West Bay, the route passes East Cliff and follows the coast beneath towering sandstone and limestone cliffs before reaching the quiet village and beach at Seatown. Along this stretch there are excellent views across Lyme Bay, while the cliffs reveal rock layers dating from the Jurassic period.
The climb to Golden Cap is one of the highlights of the South West Coast Path. At 191 metres, Golden Cap is the highest point on England's south coast and commands panoramic views stretching from Portland Bill in the east to Dartmoor on a clear day. The surrounding National Trust estate includes flower-rich chalk and limestone grassland, ancient hedgerows and patches of woodland, supporting butterflies, orchids and a wide variety of farmland birds.
The route continues across Stonebarrow Hill and Chardown Hill, where elevated ridges provide uninterrupted views over the Jurassic Coast, the Axe Valley and the Dorset countryside. These quieter inland sections contrast with the dramatic coastline and pass through a landscape of traditional pasture, hedgerows and small woodland copses.
The walk finishes back in West Bay, a historic harbour town best known for its distinctive golden cliffs, busy fishing harbour and shingle and sandy beaches. Visitors can explore the harbour, enjoy the seafood restaurants and cafés, or continue along the seafront and East Beach, with the striking cliffs providing one of the most recognisable coastal landscapes in Dorset.
