Alresford Millennium Walk
2.5 miles (4 km)This circular walk follows the Millennium Trail around the historic town of Alresford.
The walk starts in the Station Yard where the town’s developing watercress industry once gained access to London markets via the railway. From the station, the route passes through the churchyard of St John the Baptist, which features a Saxon rood and the graves of Napoleonic prisoners of war, before leading into the broad, elegant streets of the town centre.... The walk showcases a fine collection of Georgian architecture along Broad Street and East Street, including the old fire station and various buildings that survived major fires in the 17th century.
The trail descends into the scenic Alre Valley, following Ladywell Lane past natural springs and the Memorial Garden toward the river. One of the most striking landmarks on this stretch is the 13th-century Fulling Mill, a thatched timber-framed structure that spans the River Alre. Along the riverbank, walkers can enjoy a lush environment filled with horse chestnut and alder trees—the latter of which gives Alresford its name—while keeping an eye out for local birdlife such as ducks and kingfishers. The path also passes the grave of Hambone Jr., a dog who was a popular companion to American soldiers stationed nearby during the Second World War.
Continuing through Arlebury Park, the walk offers views of the 18th-century Arlebury Park House and panoramic vistas across Fob Down. The route then transitions into The Avenue, a long, lime-tree-lined path gifted to the town for recreation in 1869. Highlights along this final section include the hexagonal Old Toll House and the front gates of Arlebury Park House, known for its noisy heronry in the mature Cedar of Lebanon trees. The trail concludes by returning to the town's West Street, passing historic coaching inns and small lanes associated with Alresford’s former brewing trade.
