This walk takes you through Ashbourne Tunnel in the Derbyshire Dales town of Ashbourne. You can start the walk from the parking area just west of the town, off Mapleton Road.... Then follow a section of the Tissington Trail south through the tunnel.
Ashbourne Tunnel is part of the former railway line that once connected Ashbourne with Buxton and Manchester. Today the old railway has been transformed into the popular Tissington Trail, providing a traffic-free route through the attractive Derbyshire countryside. The tunnel itself is an interesting feature of the trail, offering a short underground section before the route emerges into the surrounding countryside.
The walk provides an easy way to experience a small section of the Tissington Trail without committing to the much longer route. The former railway alignment gives the trail a generally level and well-surfaced character, while the surrounding countryside includes fields, woodland and attractive views towards the hills of the Derbyshire Dales.
Ashbourne makes a pleasant place to begin or finish the walk, with a historic town centre containing attractive Georgian buildings, independent shops, cafés and pubs. The town is also an excellent base for exploring the wider Peak District and the numerous walking and cycling trails that radiate into the surrounding countryside.
