Bitton Circular Railway Walk

5 miles (8 km)

This circular walk explores the area surrounding the village of Bitton between Bristol and Bath. The route starts in Bitton village and heads west to to cross the River Boyd and link up with the Bristol and Bath Railway Path which runs along the heritage Avon Valley Railway.... Follow the old railway line south and it will take you across the River Avon towards Saltford. The route then follows pleasant riverside paths past Swineford before linking back up with railway path.
The historic starting point of Bitton features deep roots stretching back to Roman times when it served as a key settlement along the ancient Via Julia road. Today, the village is highly celebrated for Bitton Station, a fully restored Victorian railway yard that functions as the headquarters for the volunteer-run Avon Valley Railway. This heritage site preserves a three-mile section of the old Midland Railway line, allowing visitors to see operational steam locomotives, vintage carriages, and an original 1869 goods shed. The surrounding scenery transitions from the historic village architecture into a wide, open valley bordered by the rolling hills of the Cotswolds edge, offering sweeping views across expansive agricultural fields and low-lying floodplains.
