Brownsham to Clovelly Circular Walk
5.3 miles (8.6 km)This circular walk begins at the National Trust car park in Brownsham, where you immediately enter the deep, tranquil canopy of Brownsham Wood.
The trail leads you through ancient oak and hazel trees, following the gentle sound of the stream as the path winds through the lush valley floor.... Emerging from the shade of the woodland, you transition into open farmland, crossing wide fields and stiles that offer expansive views of the rolling North Devon countryside as you head toward the historic estate of Clovelly Court Gardens.
The route passes by the impressive kitchen gardens and Victorian glasshouses, leading you toward the dramatic clifftops that overlook the famous cobbled village below. From here, you enter Cliff Walk Wood, where the path hugs the coastline under a canopy of wind-swept trees. You then cross into the Deer Park, a high plateau where the landscape opens up significantly, providing some of the most iconic views of the walk across the Bristol Channel toward Lundy Island and the jagged cliffs of the Atlantic coast.
The return leg follows the South West Coast Path, winding through the dense, atmospheric surroundings of Beckland Wood. This section of the walk is characterized by steep-sided combes and the sight of bluebells or wild garlic in the spring, with occasional breaks in the foliage offering glimpses of the crashing surf far below. After navigating the rugged woodland trails, the path turns inland once more, leading you on a steady climb back through the fields to finish where you started at the Brownsham car park.
