Carnforth to Lancaster Canal Walk

This walk follows a popular section of the Lancaster Canal from Carnforth to Lancaster. The route runs for about 8 miles, heading south to Bolton le Sands and Hest Bank before crossing the Lune Aqueduct and finishing in Lancaster near the cathedral.
This attractive waterside walk showcases one of the most scenic sections of the Lancaster Canal, combining peaceful towpaths with impressive views across Morecambe Bay, the Lune Estuary and the surrounding Lancashire countryside.... The level route is suitable for a wide range of walkers and offers a relaxing journey through a landscape of open fields, villages and historic canal features.
Leaving Carnforth, the canal soon enters a quieter rural landscape, passing through the village of Bolton le Sands with its attractive stone cottages and views towards the coast. The route continues to Hest Bank, where there are impressive views over Morecambe Bay towards the Lakeland fells on a clear day. The surrounding wetlands and shoreline provide an important habitat for birds, with waders, herons and other waterfowl often seen along the route.
A highlight of the walk is the crossing of the Lune Aqueduct, an impressive nineteenth-century structure carrying the canal high above the River Lune. The aqueduct provides excellent views of the river valley and is one of the most recognisable landmarks on the Lancaster Canal.
The walk finishes in Lancaster, a historic city with a rich heritage dating back over many centuries. The canal arrives close to the city centre, where you can explore Lancaster Cathedral, the castle, historic streets, museums, cafés and traditional pubs.
