This circular walk visits Stoney Middleton from Eyam. The walk starts off from the main parking area in Eyam, close to the famous Plague Stone.... the route then follows public footpaths south east to Stony Middleton before following alternative paths back to Eyam via Riley Grabes and Riley Wood.
This circular walk visits Stoney Middleton from Eyam. The walk starts off from the main parking area in Eyam, close to the famous Plague Stone. The route then follows public footpaths south east to Stoney Middleton before following alternative paths back to Eyam via Riley Graves and Riley Wood. The walk takes you through some lovely Peak District countryside, with a mixture of woodland, open farmland and peaceful country lanes along the way. As you leave Eyam, the route heads towards Stoney Middleton, a picturesque village set in a dramatic limestone valley. The village is surrounded by impressive rocky scenery and has a long association with the quarrying of limestone, which has shaped much of the landscape in this part of the White Peak. On the return leg, the route passes Riley Graves, a poignant reminder of the village's history during the Great Plague of 1665–66. The graves mark the final resting place of members of the Riley family who died during the outbreak. The path then continues through Riley Wood, providing a peaceful wooded section before returning to Eyam. Back in Eyam, you can explore the village's fascinating plague history, with the Plague Stone, Eyam Hall and the village's historic cottages among the highlights. The village is also an excellent base for exploring the surrounding Peak District, with further walks leading into the hills and valleys around this historic part of Derbyshire.
