Fishguard to Strumble Head Walk
7.2 miles (11.6 km)This walk follows a section of the Pembrokeshire Coast Path from Fishguard to Strumble Head.
The walk starts from the quay in fishguard and runs for just over 7 miles along an undulating cliff top path.
The route passes through a landscape defined by its rugged volcanic geology and dramatic coastal scenery. Leaving the sheltered harbour of Lower Fishguard, the trail gains elevation quickly, offering expansive views across Fishguard Bay toward Dinas Head.... As you progress westward, you encounter the site of the 1797 "Last Invasion of Britain" at Carreg Wastad Point, marked by a stone memorial. The terrain here is characterised by steep-sided valleys known as combes and high, exposed clifftops that require a steady pace and appropriate footwear for the rocky sections.
This stretch is an exceptional location for wildlife observation, particularly for those interested in marine mammals and seabirds. The deep waters off the coast are frequently visited by harbour porpoises, which can often be seen breaking the surface near the headlands. Atlantic grey seals are a common sight in the secluded coves below, especially during the autumn pupping season. Overhead, you might spot peregrine falcons patrolling the cliffs or choughs—distinguishable by their red beaks and legs—performing aerial displays along the ridge.
The final approach to Strumble Head is marked by the sight of the iconic white lighthouse perched on the tiny island of Ynys Meicel. This area is one of Britain’s premier spots for watching migratory birds, as the headland acts as a natural landmark for species travelling along the coast. The stark, windswept beauty of the lighthouse against the backdrop of the Irish Sea provides a definitive conclusion to the walk, capturing the wild and untamed character of the North Pembrokeshire coastline.
