Fovant Badges Walk
2.9 miles (4.6 km)This circular walk visits the Fovant Badges and Chiselbury Hill Fort in Wiltshire.
As you climb the steep chalk escarpment, you are greeted by the striking sight of the Fovant Badges, a series of massive regimental crests carved into the hillside by soldiers garrisoned nearby during the First World War. These scheduled ancient monuments, including the iconic map of Australia and the emblem of the Royal Wiltshire Yeomanry, serve as a moving hillside memorial visible for miles across the Nadder Valley.
Continuing along the ridge, the trail leads to the summit of Chiselbury Hill Fort, an Iron Age earthwork featuring a distinct circular rampart and a single entrance.... From this elevated position, you can enjoy sweeping 360-degree views that stretch across the Salisbury Plain and south toward the Cranborne Chase. The return leg descends through quiet chalk downland and ancient trackways, often passing through fenced grazing areas where the rare flora and fauna of the Wiltshire countryside thrive.
After descending from the hill you could explore Fovant village with its pretty thatched cottages.
You can continue your walking by heading north west to visit the lovely Fonthill Estate and the attractive village of Tisbury.
