Henfield Deer Walk

3.7 miles (6 km)

This circular walk explores the countryside and woods to the east of the West Sussex village of Henfield. The route includes a pleasant trail through Henfield Common and also passes Woodmancote Place and church at the eastern tip.... On the way keep your eyes peeled for the many deer that roam through this area.
The route starts from the historic village of Henfield, a settlement with roots dating back to the Anglo-Saxon period and recorded in the Domesday Book. Crossing Henfield Common reveals a beautiful, ancient common land landscape featuring open heathland, gorse bushes, and large ponds that have served the local community for centuries. At the easternmost point of the trail stands Woodmancote Place, a magnificent historic manor house surrounded by extensive formal gardens and a medieval moat, sitting adjacent to the eleventh-century St Peter's Church. The scenery along this circuit offers a classic Sussex layout, transitioning seamlessly from the village margins into quiet country lanes, open agricultural fields, and thick patches of ancient oak woodland.
The diverse combination of woodland, damp common land, and quiet pastures makes this entire area a thriving sanctuary for native British wildlife and seasonal flora. Aside from the healthy resident herds of roe deer and fallow deer that frequently graze in the open glades, walkers can regularly spot green woodpeckers, buzzards, and tawny owls nesting in the mature tree canopy. During the spring and summer months, the woodland floors and common margins are thickly carpeted with wild bluebells, wood anemones, and foxgloves, which attract a wide variety of local butterflies and bumblebees.
