Lordenshaws Loop Walk

This circular walk visits the Lordenshaws hillfort in Rothbury Forest in the Northumberland National Park. The walk can be started from the public car park just south of the hill.... From here you head north to visit the hillfort before descending towards the Whitton Burn and Hillhead Road.
Lordenshaws is an impressive Iron Age hillfort situated on the edge of the Cheviot Hills, with extensive views across the surrounding Northumberland countryside. The earthworks include a large enclosure with ramparts and ditches, while the surrounding landscape contains further prehistoric remains including burial cairns and ancient settlements.
The hillfort occupies an elevated position above the Coquet Valley, making the surrounding landscape a major highlight of the walk. On clear days there are far-reaching views across the Cheviots and towards the Simonside Hills, with the open moorland providing a wonderfully wild character.
The area is particularly rich in archaeology, and walking around Lordenshaws provides an opportunity to explore a landscape that has been occupied for thousands of years. The combination of ancient earthworks, open hills and expansive views makes this one of the most interesting short walks in the Northumberland National Park.
