Ludlow to Mortimer Forest Circular Walk
3.4 miles (5.4 km)This circular walk explores the north eastern section of Mortimer Forest from the Shropshire town of Ludlow. Starting from Dinham Bridge over the River Teme the route follows the Mortimer Trail south west into the expansive forest where there are miles of peaceful woodland trails to try.
The forest occupies a large area of high ground between Ludlow and the Herefordshire border, combining extensive conifer plantations with areas of native broadleaved woodland.... The varied landscape supports a rich range of wildlife, including deer, birds of prey and woodland birds, while the changing seasons bring displays of wildflowers in spring and colourful foliage in autumn.
As the route leaves the River Teme behind, it enters a tranquil woodland environment of forest tracks, shaded paths and clearings. The higher parts of Mortimer Forest provide impressive views across the surrounding countryside, with vistas extending towards the Shropshire Hills and the Welsh borderlands from a number of viewpoints within the wider forest.
Mortimer Forest also has a long history, taking its name from the powerful Mortimer family who once controlled large areas of the Welsh Marches. Today it is one of the largest woodland areas in the region, offering a peaceful contrast to nearby Ludlow and making it a popular destination for walking, cycling and wildlife watching.
