Lyndhurst Hill and Emery Down Circular Walk

6.3 miles (10.2 km)

This circular walk explores Lyndhurst Hill, Emery Down and Swan Green in the New Forest.
You can start and finish the walk from the car park at Swanley Green just to the west of Lyndhurst.
The scenic 6.2 mile route showcases a diverse blend of ancient woodland, open heathland, and traditional village charm.
The area around Swan Green is particularly iconic, known for its picturesque thatched cottages and the traditional cricket green that epitomises the English countryside.... As you transition away from the village towards Lyndhurst Hill, the scenery opens up into vast, rolling heathlands. This elevated section of the forest provides panoramic views across the canopy, where the purple heather and yellow gorse create a vibrant palette of seasonal colours throughout the year.
The trek toward Acres Down is a highlight for nature enthusiasts and birdwatchers. This part of the forest is renowned for its wildlife spotting opportunities, particularly for birds of prey like goshawks and honey buzzards that soar over the deep enclosures. The terrain here shifts into dense, ancient woodland, with towering oaks and beeches providing a tranquil, shaded atmosphere. Walking through this region feels like stepping back in time, as the moss-covered logs and winding forest tracks remain largely unchanged, offering a peaceful escape for hikers and families looking to explore the Best of the New Forest.
