Marlborough to Avebury Walk

6.5 miles (10.5 km)

Following the ancient Wessex Ridgeway west from Marlborough, this roughly 6.5-mile walk traverses a landscape profoundly shaped by both prehistoric inhabitants and natural history.
The route climbs steadily from the historic market town onto the high chalk plateaus of the North Wessex Downs, where the enclosed valley views quickly expand into vast, rolling horizons.... As you cross Barton Down, the path levels out into wide-open grasslands, often shared with racehorses from nearby training gallops, whose presence adds a sense of movement to the otherwise still and silent downland.
The journey continues into Fyfield Down National Nature Reserve, home to the most significant concentration of sarsen stones in England. These massive sandstone boulders, scattered across the slopes like a "natural quarry," provided the building blocks for the monuments at both Stonehenge and Avebury. Among these fields lie the  Grey Wethers, a cluster of stones named for their striking resemblance to grazing sheep when viewed from a distance. The stones are not just geological curiosities; they support a nationally important collection of rare lichens and offer a glimpse into the periglacial conditions that originally deposited them across the chalk valleys millions of years ago.
As you trek over Overton Down toward the final descent, the high-altitude vantage points offer some of the best views in Wiltshire, reaching toward the distant Vale of Pewsey and the silhouettes of nearby hillforts. The area is a sanctuary for wildlife adapted to the open heath; skylarks are a frequent accompaniment with their soaring song, while red kites and buzzards are often seen riding the thermals above the ridges. Descending toward the village of Avebury, the scale of the ancient Avebury Stones and deep-cut earthworks comes into full view, marking a dramatic end to a walk through one of Britain’s most atmospheric landscapes.
