Mortehoe to Lee Bay Coastal Walk
2.2 miles (3.6 km)This dramatic coastal trek begins in the historic village of Mortehoe, where you head toward the shoreline to join the South West Coast Path as it winds around the rugged North Devon headland. The first major landmark is Bull Point, home to a prominent white lighthouse that has guided mariners since 1879.... The path here is high and windswept, offering incredible views across the Bristol Channel where the dark, jagged rocks of the shoreline contrast sharply with the churning Atlantic swells.
Continuing east from the lighthouse, the trail descends into a series of secluded valleys and follows the cliff edge through Rockham Bay. This stretch is known for its steep gradients and ancient slate formations, providing a truly wild feel as you navigate the narrow path flanked by gorse and wildflowers. You will pass the dramatic rock architecture of Bennett's Mouth, a tiny rocky inlet that feels miles from civilisation, before the path begins its final descent through wooded glades toward the sea.
The journey concludes at Lee Bay, often referred to as "Fuchsia Valley" due to the abundance of exotic flowers that thrive in its sheltered microclimate. This picturesque cove is a hidden gem characterized by its calm waters and rock pools which are revealed at low tide. The village of Lee itself, with its thatched cottages and stone walls, provides a tranquil finish to one of the most rugged and rewarding sections of the North Devon coastline.
