Putsborough to Baggy Point Walk
1.9 miles (3.1 km)This walk takes you from Putsborough Sands to Baggy Point on the coast of the North Devon AONB.
Starting from the parking area near the beach the walk follows the South West Coast Path for about 2 miles to the headland.
The route begins following a public footpath that leads you uphill and along the edge of Morte Bay. As you head west, the path remains mostly level but winds through shoulder-high gorse bushes that bloom with bright yellow flowers during the late summer and autumn.... This section of the trail, known as Bloodhills Cliff, offers dramatic views across the two-mile sweep of Woolacombe beach toward Morte Point.
Continuing along the headland, you will reach the prominent Baggy Point Wreck Post, a white pole originally used by the coastguard to practice breeches buoy rescues when the sea was too rough for lifeboats. Nearby, a concrete bunker and a large concrete arrow set in the grass serve as reminders of World War II, when the area was used as a training ground for the D-Day landings. As the path rounds the tip of the headland, the view opens up to reveal Croyde Bay and, on clear days, the silhouette of Lundy Island and the South Wales coast. For a break, you can retrace your steps or continue toward the Sandleigh Tea-room near the National Trust car park in Croyde.
