Pontymoile Basin Walk

This walk takes you along a fine section of the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal from Pontymoile Basin to Goytre Wharf. The route runs for just under 6 miles, starting from Pontymoile Basin near Pontypool.... From here you head north, passing Mamhilad before arriving at the popular Goytre Wharf.
This is one of the most attractive sections of the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal, following a peaceful, lock-free stretch through the Usk Valley with fine views towards the surrounding hills. Opened in the late eighteenth century, the canal was built to transport iron, coal and limestone from the industrial valleys of South Wales, and today provides one of the country's finest waterside walking routes.
Leaving Pontymoile Basin, the level towpath passes through a mixture of woodland, open farmland and quiet rural landscapes. The canal is rich in wildlife, with swans, moorhens, kingfishers, herons and dragonflies regularly seen along the water, while mature hedgerows and trees provide habitat for a variety of woodland and farmland birds. Around Mamhilad the route enjoys attractive views across the surrounding countryside, with the Black Mountains visible on clear days.
The walk finishes at Goytre Wharf, one of the best-preserved canal centres on the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal. The restored wharf includes historic lime kilns, traditional canal buildings, a marina and visitor facilities, making it a popular destination for walkers, boaters and wildlife enthusiasts. From here you can continue north along the canal towards Crickhowell and Brecon or explore the surrounding countryside on the local network of footpaths.
