Porthleven to Mullion Cove Walk
7.2 miles (11.6 km)This walk takes you from Porthleven to Mullion Cove along a section of the South West Coast Path. The walk runs for just over 7 miles, following the waymarked trail south east past Loe Bar, Gunwalloe, Poldhu Cove and Mullion village....
The route explores a varied stretch of the Lizard Peninsula coastline, combining rugged cliffs, sandy beaches and expansive sea views. After passing Loe Bar and Gunwalloe, the path continues through open coastal grassland and heathland where maritime plants thrive in the exposed conditions. Seabirds are frequently seen along the cliffs, while grey seals are occasionally spotted in the waters below.
A highlight of the walk is Poldhu Cove, a broad sandy bay backed by dunes and low cliffs. The area is also known for its place in communications history, as nearby Poldhu was the site of one of the world's earliest transatlantic wireless transmissions by Guglielmo Marconi in 1901. Beyond the cove, the path continues towards Mullion, passing dramatic cliff scenery and small rocky inlets along the way.
The walk finishes at Mullion Cove, a picturesque harbour sheltered by substantial stone breakwaters built during the 19th century. The cove is surrounded by steep cliffs and clear waters, with views extending along the coast towards the southern reaches of the Lizard Peninsula. The combination of coastal scenery, wildlife, historic landmarks and traditional fishing heritage makes this one of the most rewarding sections of the South West Coast Path in Cornwall.
