Saltburn to Runswick Bay Walk

11.7 miles (18.8 km)

This walk follows a section of the Cleveland Way from Saltburn to Runswick Bay on the Yorkshire coast. The route runs for jus under 12 miles, following the waymarked trail east along an undulating cliff top path.
The trail starts by climbing away from the historic Victorian resort of Saltburn-by-the-Sea, ascending toward Boulby Cliffs, which stand at 660 feet (200 metres) and are among the highest cliffs on the east coast of England.... The path passes through Skinningrove and the picturesque fishing village of Staithes, offering a mix of steep ascents, rocky staircases, and level terrain. This challenging route is popular with long-distance hikers looking to experience the dramatic coastline of the North York Moors National Park.
The diverse habitats along the cliffs make it an important area for coastal wildlife and geology. The sheer rock faces host nesting seabird colonies, where you can observe kittiwakes, fulmars, and herring gulls during the spring and summer breeding seasons. The surrounding scrub and grasslands provide foraging ground for kestrels and skylarks. Additionally, the shoreline below is rich in ironstone and shale formations, making the beaches near Staithes and Runswick Bay notable hotspots for finding ammonite fossils and jet.
