Forestry at Slieve Bawn - track by wind turbine No 13
Forestry at Slieve Bawn. The 262-metre hill serves as a major hub for both renewable energy and outdoor recreation. The landscape is dominated by a wind farm commissioned in 2017, which consists of twenty turbines providing green energy to the national grid while sharing the space with extensive public facilities. Managed by Coillte, the area features a variety of looped trails designed for hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians, ranging from the short and accessible Trim Trail to more challenging routes that traverse the hillside.
Forestry at Slieve Bawn - summit picnic area
At the summit, visitors are greeted by a large stone cross and expansive views that stretch across the River Shannon and the surrounding midlands. To cater to families and fitness enthusiasts, the site includes a dedicated children’s playground, a picnic zone, and an outdoor gym circuit integrated into the forest paths. Historically, the mountain has been a point of local significance, and its modern redevelopment has transformed it into one of the most popular natural attractions in the Hidden Heartlands region.
