Slough Canal Walk
5 miles (8 km)This walk takes you along the Slough Arm of the Grand Union Canal Walk. Starting from the Slough Canal Basin you head east along the towpath for about 5 miles to Yiewsley where you join with main line of the canal.
The Slough Branch was opened in 1882 to connect the growing industrial town of Slough with the Grand Junction Canal, later becoming part of today's Grand Union Canal network.... Although much shorter than the main line, the branch played an important role in transporting bricks, timber, coal and manufactured goods, helping to support the rapid expansion of Slough during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
The level towpath provides an easy waterside walk through a mixture of urban green spaces, suburban neighbourhoods and quiet stretches lined with mature trees. Traditional canal bridges, moored narrowboats and waterside wildlife are regular features along the route, with herons, kingfishers, swans, ducks and dragonflies frequently seen on or beside the water.
The walk finishes at Yiewsley, where the Slough Branch meets the main line of the Grand Union Canal. The junction is an important point on Britain's inland waterway network and provides opportunities to continue walking north towards Uxbridge and Rickmansworth or south towards Hayes, Brentford and the River Thames.
