St Catherine's Woods
0.9 miles (1.5 km)A walk through St. Catherine’s Woods begins at the entrance near the reservoir or the bottom of the valley.... The main path follows a stream that runs the length of the woods, shaded by a thick canopy of oak, beech, and chestnut trees. The terrain is largely flat along the valley floor, though the surrounding slopes, or côtils, are steep and covered in ferns.
As you head deeper into the woods, you will encounter several sets of stepping stones used to cross the meandering stream. These are a key feature of the route and can be slippery after rain. The path is well-defined but can get muddy, especially in the lower, marshy sections of the valley.
The woodland is a stronghold for red squirrels, and you will often hear them or see them moving through the high branches. Great spotted woodpeckers are also common here. The walk typically loops back on itself or connects upward toward the surrounding lanes, offering a quiet, sheltered alternative to the nearby coastal paths.
You can continue your walking in the area at the Queens Valley Reservoir.
