Thirlwall Castle Walk

This circular walk visits Thirlwall Castle, on Hadrian's Wall in the Northumberland National Park. You can start your walk from the roadside parking area just north of the castle and a couple of miles east of Gilsland.... Walking paths take you around the ancient site before picking up waterside paths along the Tipalt Burn and Charney Burn to complete the walk.
Thirlwall Castle is a striking medieval ruin built in the fourteenth century from stone taken from the nearby Hadrian's Wall. Although much of the castle is now in ruins, its thick walls and towers provide an atmospheric reminder of the area's long history. The castle stands beside the Tipalt Burn, adding to the picturesque setting.
The surrounding countryside is typical of the Northumberland National Park, with quiet valleys, open fields and wooded sections along the burns. The waterside paths provide a pleasant contrast to the historic site, with the sound of running water and opportunities to spot birds and other wildlife along the banks.
The walk is also close to Gilsland and the wider Hadrian's Wall corridor, where there are numerous opportunities to explore the remains of the Roman frontier and enjoy further walks through the surrounding Northumberland countryside.
You can continue your walking by visiting Birdoswald and the Crammel Linn Waterfall.
