Vallis Vale is one of the most attractive natural areas around Frome, with ancient woodland, limestone cliffs, flower-rich meadows and the clear waters of the River Mells creating a peaceful setting throughout the year. The wooded valley is managed as a Local Nature Reserve and supports a rich variety of wildlife, making it a rewarding destination for nature lovers and walkers alike.
The route follows well-used paths beside the river, passing beneath mature beech and ash trees and through the tranquil Wadbury Valley. In spring the woodland floor is carpeted with wildflowers, while the river and surrounding habitats attract kingfishers, dippers, grey wagtails and a wide variety of butterflies. The area also has an interesting industrial history, with traces of former mills and quarrying reflecting the valley's past.
The walk finishes in Frome, one of Somerset's most distinctive market towns. Its medieval streets, independent shops, cafés and historic buildings make it well worth exploring, while the River Frome and the town's many green spaces provide a pleasant end to this varied riverside walk.
