Welshpool to Newtown Canal Walk
14 miles (22.5 km)This walk runs from Welshpool to Newtown along the Montgomery Canal section of the Shropshire Union Canal. The route runs for about 14 miles heading south along the towpath to Berriew and Aberbechan before coming into Newtown.
The walk takes you through the picturesque Severn Valley, passing a peaceful landscape of meadows, woodlands and the rolling countryside of Powys.... Much of the canal is recognised as an important nature conservation area, with its slow-moving waters supporting dragonflies, damselflies, water voles, otters and a rich variety of aquatic plants. The towpath provides an easy, largely level walk with frequent views across the surrounding farmland and hills.
Leaving Welshpool, the canal passes a series of restored locks and tranquil rural stretches before reaching the attractive village of Berriew. The village is known for its timber-framed buildings, the River Rhiw and the nearby remains of Montgomery Castle, which can be visited on a short detour to the historic county town of Montgomery. South of Berriew, the route continues through quiet countryside to Aberbechan, where the canal closely follows the River Severn.
The final section enters Newtown, the largest town in Powys and the birthplace of the social reformer Robert Owen. Walkers can also visit the excellent Powysland Museum, which explores the history, archaeology and natural heritage of the surrounding area.
You can continue your walking in the area on the Moel Y Golfa Breidden Hills Circular Walk.
