West Stockwith Canal Walk

This walk follows a section of the Chesterfield Canal from West Stockwith to Gringley on the Hill. The 5 mile route begins at the West Stockwith Canal Basin and heads west, passing Misterton before leaving the canal and heading south to finish in Gringley.
West Stockwith Basin marks the eastern terminus of the Chesterfield Canal where the historic waterway meets the River Trent.... Opened in 1777, the canal provided an important transport route between the industrial areas of Derbyshire and the Trent, carrying coal, lead, iron and agricultural goods. Today the attractive basin is a popular destination for boaters and walkers, with narrowboats, waterside buildings and fine views across the surrounding countryside.
The canal section through Misterton passes through a peaceful rural landscape of open farmland, grassland and wetland habitats. The slow-moving water and adjacent reedbeds support a variety of wildlife, with herons, kingfishers, swans, ducks and dragonflies regularly seen along the towpath. Historic bridges, locks and canal structures provide reminders of the waterway's long history and add interest throughout the walk.
The route finishes at Gringley on the Hill, one of Nottinghamshire's most distinctive villages. Set on a prominent ridge overlooking the Trent Valley, the village enjoys far-reaching views across Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire and South Yorkshire. The historic Church of St Peter and St Paul occupies one of the finest viewpoints in the county, while the village itself retains much of its rural character with traditional cottages and quiet lanes.
