Yarmouth to Needles Coastal Walk
6.2 miles (10 km)This walk follows the Isle of Wight Coast Path from the ferry pier at Yarmouth to The Needles on the western side of the island. The route runs for just over 6 miles, passing Fort Victoria Country Park and Freshwater and Headon Warren before arriving at the iconic rocks.
The route combines coastal paths, woodland tracks, and elevated heather downlands.... Starting from Yarmouth ferry pier, the trail runs west into Fort Victoria Country Park, which surrounds a 19th-century maritime fort and offers views across the Solent. The path then passes the coastal edges of Freshwater, leading towards the steep slopes of Headon Warren. This high heather-clad headland features a Bronze Age burial mound and provides a vantage point over Alum Bay. The walk finishes at the viewpoints overlooking the famous chalk stacks of The Needles and the historic Needles Old Battery.
The diverse environments of mature woodland, sand dunes, and maritime heathland support a wide range of specialised species. The coastal canopy within Fort Victoria Country Park is a reliable location for spotting native red squirrels, whilst the shoreline below is used by foraging wading birds. The open heathland at Headon Warren is a nationally important habitat for reptiles, including the common lizard and adder, and supports distinct bird species such as the Dartford warbler. During the summer months, the flowering heather provides nectar for numerous pollinators, including the rare green hairstreak butterfly.
