Burry Holms and Broughton Bay Walk
2.7 miles (4.4 km)This circular walk visits the tidal island of Burry Holms and Broughton Bay on the Gower Peninsula near Llangennith.
The walk explores a remote and atmospheric stretch of coast at the western end of Rhossili Bay. Access to Burry Holms is possible only at low tide, when the causeway of sand is exposed, and careful timing is essential to avoid being cut off by the incoming tide.... The island feels wild and isolated, with open grassland, low dunes and extensive views back across the bay towards Rhossili and Worm’s Head.
Burry Holms is also of archaeological interest, with evidence of Mesolithic and later prehistoric activity, and the remains of a small medieval church visible among the grassy hummocks. From the island the route returns across the sands before heading along the coastline to the Blue Pool, a deep natural rock pool set beneath the cliffs and filled with strikingly clear blue-green water. The surrounding cliffs and rock platforms add to the sense of seclusion, and the area is especially impressive in calm weather. To the east lies the lovely beaches and dunes at Broughton Bay.
This walk combines tidal planning, coastal scenery and a strong sense of history in one of the most distinctive landscapes on the Gower.
