Castle Caldwell Forest Walk

2.5 miles (4.1 km)

This walk explores Castle Caldwell Forest on the western shore of Lower Lough Erne in County Fermanagh, an area managed as a forest park with a network of well-maintained trails. The routes begin close to the lakeshore and pass through gently undulating woodland, making this a relaxed walk with clear paths and minimal ascent.
The forest is largely mixed woodland, with conifer plantations interspersed with mature broadleaf trees such as oak and beech.... As the walk progresses, there are frequent glimpses of Lower Lough Erne through the trees, with open sections of shoreline providing wider views across the water to scattered islands and wooded peninsulas that characterise this part of the lough system.
A focal point of the walk is the ruin of Castle Caldwell itself, an 18th-century house set above the shore and now partially overgrown. Although roofless, the remains are still prominent and give a strong sense of the former estate landscape, with old boundary walls and parkland features visible nearby. The setting is quiet and lightly developed, adding to the sense of seclusion.
Wildlife is a notable feature of the forest and lakeshore, with waterbirds often present on the lough and woodland species common along the trails. The paths are clearly waymarked and suitable for year-round use, offering a combination of woodland walking, lakeside scenery and local history within a compact area.
