Cavan Leitrim Greenway

The Cavan Leitrim Greenway is a gentle, traffic-free walking and cycling route running east from the town of Ballinamore in County Leitrim through quiet rural countryside shaped by the area’s railway heritage.
The greenway begins beside the public car park in the centre of Ballinamore, close to the site of the former Ballinamore station. From here, the route follows the trackbed of the old Cavan and Leitrim Railway, heading east for around 5.2 kilometres towards Corgar.... The flat, well-surfaced path makes this an accessible walk, suitable for all abilities, with wide open views almost from the outset.
As the route leaves the town, it quickly settles into a peaceful landscape of farmland, wetlands and small lakes. The greenway closely traces the line of the historic railway, and along the way you pass a number of surviving masonry bridges that provide a strong sense of the area’s transport history. These structures sit naturally within the landscape and add character to the walk.
The path winds gently through the townlands of Bolganard, Drumlonan and Corgar, with frequent views across open fields and waterlogged meadows. Corgar Lough forms a particular highlight near the eastern end of the route, offering quiet waterside scenery and a feeling of remoteness despite the easy walking conditions.
Wildlife is a strong feature of the greenway, with birds commonly seen along the route including swans, herons, ducks and various songbirds attracted by the mix of water, hedgerows and grassland. In summer months, wildflowers line sections of the path, while the surrounding wetlands support a rich range of plant life throughout the year.
The Ballinamore to Corgar section of the Cavan Leitrim Greenway provides an enjoyable and informative walk that combines local history with attractive countryside, making it a rewarding short route for those looking to explore Leitrim at a relaxed pace.You can continue your walking in the town on the Ballinamore Canal Walk.
