Kendal to Lancaster Canal Walk
26.7 miles (43 km)This walk follows a section of the Lancaster Canal from Kendal to Lancaster. The route runs for about 27 miles, heading south to Tewitfield Locks, Carnforth and Bolton le Sands before finishing in Lancaster near the cathedral.
The trail follows the line of the Lancaster Canal through the beautiful landscapes of south Cumbria and north Lancashire.... North of Tewitfield Locks the canal is no longer navigable, but the former towpath remains a pleasant walking route through peaceful countryside. South of Tewitfield the canal becomes fully watered once again, providing an uninterrupted towpath all the way to Lancaster.
The route passes through a varied landscape of rolling farmland, woodland and attractive villages, with distant views towards the Lake District fells, the Forest of Bowland and Morecambe Bay. Highlights include the impressive flight of locks at Tewitfield, the historic canal basin at Carnforth, the picturesque village of Bolton le Sands and the magnificent Lune Aqueduct, one of the finest engineering structures on the English canal network. Swans, herons, kingfishers and a variety of wetland birds are frequently seen along the waterway.
The walk finishes in Lancaster, one of the North West's most historic cities. The canal passes close to the city centre, where attractions include Lancaster Castle, the Priory Church, Lancaster Cathedral, the riverside quays and a wide selection of independent shops, cafés and traditional pubs.
