Preston to Lancaster Canal Walk

29.2 miles (47 km)

This walk follows a section of the Lancaster Canal from Preston to Lancaster. The route runs for about 30 miles, following the towpath north to Bilsborrow, Garstang and Galgate.
This is one of the finest long-distance canal walks in north-west England, taking you through the rich agricultural landscape of the Fylde and the Lune Valley.... The Lancaster Canal is unusual in having no locks along this section, creating an easy, level walk with uninterrupted towpaths, peaceful waterside scenery and wide views across the surrounding countryside to the Bowland Fells and the distant Lake District hills.
Leaving Preston, the route heads through open farmland and quiet rural landscapes to Bilsborrow, before continuing to the attractive market town of Garstang. Beyond Garstang the canal passes marinas, historic bridges and wooded stretches before reaching Galgate, where the Glasson Branch leaves the main canal for Glasson Dock. Throughout the walk the canal supports a rich variety of wildlife, with swans, herons, kingfishers, ducks and dragonflies frequently seen along the water's edge.
The walk finishes in Lancaster, one of Lancashire's most historic cities. The canal passes close to the city centre, where attractions include the imposing Lancaster Castle, the riverside quays, the Priory Church and a wide selection of cafés, pubs and independent shops, making it an excellent destination at the end of this memorable waterside walk.
