New Mills to Chinley Walk
4.5 miles (7.3 km)This linear walk runs from New Mills Chinley. The route runs for 4.5 miles, following the Peak Forest Canal south to Bridgemont, before turning east to Buxworth and finishing at Chinley.
The walk begins in New Mills, a historic town in the Goyt Valley, and soon joins the peaceful towpath of the Peak Forest Canal.... The canal passes through attractive countryside and woodland, with the waterway providing an easy and largely level route towards Bridgemont. Along the way there are fine views across the surrounding hills and plenty of interest from the canal's industrial heritage.
At Bridgemont the route leaves the canal and heads east towards Buxworth, passing through the countryside beneath the hills of the Peak District. Buxworth is home to the historic Bugsworth Basin, one of the most important surviving canal basins in Britain and once a major transhipment point for limestone and other goods.
From Buxworth the route continues towards Chinley, with the surrounding hills becoming increasingly prominent as you approach the village. The walk provides a pleasant linear journey combining canal scenery, industrial heritage and attractive Peak District countryside, and finishes in Chinley with its convenient railway station.
