Surrey Three Peaks Walk

22.1 miles (35.6 km)

This challenging circular walk visits Leith Hill, Holmbury Hill and Box Hill in the Surrey Hills. The route makes use of the waymarked Greensand Way and Mole Gap Trail.
Starting from the quiet surroundings of Westhumble station, the journey begins with an immediate sense of the dramatic geography that defines the North Downs.... The initial climb toward Box Hill serves as a steep introduction to the day, rewarding the first effort with a panoramic vista from Salomon’s Memorial that stretches across the Weald toward the South Downs. Moving away from the popular viewpoint, the trail descends through ancient woodland and crosses the valley floor, where the landscape shifts into the manicured rows of the Denbies Wine Estate. This section offers a rare perspective of the vines rolling across the chalky slopes, creating an almost continental atmosphere before the path dives back into the dense, shaded canopy of the Surrey Hills.
As the route transitions toward the Greensand Ridge, the terrain becomes more rugged and the soil turns a deep, ferruginous red. The ascent of Holmbury Hill feels wilder and more secluded than the earlier stretches, with the summit marked by the remnants of an Iron Age hillfort. Standing at the top, the views open up to reveal the vast, wooded expanse of the Hurtwood, where the air often feels clearer and the silence more profound. From this high vantage point, the next objective, Leith Hill, is clearly visible on the horizon, its distinctive stone tower peeking above the tree line as a constant beacon for the miles ahead.
The final major climb leads up to Leith Hill, the highest point in South East England, where the atmosphere is dominated by the gothic silhouette of the tower itself. On a clear day, the perspective from this height is unparalleled, encompassing the shimmering skyline of London to the north and the English Channel through the Shoreham Gap to the south. The descent from the tower is a long, winding journey through sunken lanes and ancient bridleways, eventually looping back toward the chalk slopes of the North Downs. The closing miles offer a reflective passage through the diverse ecosystems of the Surrey Hills, moving from heathland back into the valley, finishing where the walk began with a deep appreciation for the unexpected scale and beauty of the home counties’ peaks.
