Tardebigge to Worcester Canal Walk
15 miles (24.2 km)This walk follows the Worcester and Birmingham Canal from Tardebigge Locks to Worcester. The route heads south from the locks passing Droitwich and Tibberton before skirting the edge of Worcester and finishing close to the train station.
This section of the Worcester and Birmingham Canal follows one of the most historically significant stretches of inland waterway in the West Midlands, linking the industrial heartlands around Birmingham with the River Severn at Worcester.... The canal is characterised by a series of impressive engineering features, including deep cuttings, embankments and long lock flights, reflecting its importance in the development of the regional canal network during the Industrial Revolution.
The walk begins near the famous Tardebigge Lock Flight, one of the longest in the UK, where a remarkable series of locks descends through the countryside towards the valley below. From here the canal winds through quiet Worcestershire farmland, passing hedgerows, fields and woodland edges that create a surprisingly rural atmosphere despite the proximity to major towns.
As the route approaches Droitwich, it connects with the historic salt town’s canal network, reflecting its long association with salt production and trade. Further south, the canal continues through the peaceful surroundings of Tibberton before gradually entering the outskirts of Worcester. The final approach follows the canal through suburban green corridors and riverside edges before reaching Worcester city centre, where visitors can explore the cathedral, riverside walks along the Severn, and the historic streets around the train station and city centre.
