Westward Ho to Peppercombe Walk

6.2 miles (9.9 km)

This walk takes you along the South West Coast Path from Westward Ho to Peppercombe. It's about a 6 mile walk starting from the car park at the eastern end of Westward Ho Beach.... From here you head south west along an undulating cliff top path, passing Babbacombe Mouth and Peppercombe Castle before arriving at the Peppercombe Valley. Here you can enjoy a circular walk through the inland valley before retracing your steps along the coast.
Leaving Westward Ho!, the route follows a spectacular section of the North Devon coast with expansive views across Bideford Bay and the Bristol Channel. The cliffs here form part of the North Devon Coast National Landscape and are characterised by dramatic sandstone formations, coastal grassland and patches of gorse and heath. The elevated path provides frequent viewpoints along one of the most scenic stretches of coastline in the county.
The walk passes Abbotsham Cliffs before continuing towards Peppercombe. Along this section, the coastline is largely undeveloped, with steep wooded valleys cutting through the cliffs to the sea. These habitats support a variety of wildlife, including seabirds along the cliffs and butterflies on the flower-rich coastal slopes during the warmer months.
Peppercombe Valley provides a marked contrast to the open coast. A wooded stream valley descends to a secluded pebble beach backed by red sandstone cliffs, while Peppercombe Castle stands on higher ground overlooking the sea.
