Berwick to Holy Island Walk

12.7 miles (20.4 km)

Ordnance Survey Map Open Streetmap This walk takes you along the Northumberland Coast Path from Berwick to Holy Island.
The route runs for just over 12 miles passing the lovely Cocklawburn Beach Nature Reserve on the way.
The walk begins by heading south along the coast past Cheswick Sands and Cocklawburn Beach, a nature reserve known for its sand dunes, rocky outcrops and coastal wildflowers. This stretch is mostly flat, with easy walking on sandy or grassy tracks. The beach and surrounding area support species such as terns, gulls and wading birds.
The route then continues through low farmland and hedgerows, with views from higher ground towards Bamburgh Castle in the south. Meadow birds such as skylarks are often seen here, and wildflowers are common in summer. The terrain becomes more open as the route approaches the Lindisfarne National Nature Reserve.
Access to Holy Island is via a tidal causeway, only passable at low tide. The mudflats and saltmarsh attract grey seals and large numbers of wintering wildfowl, including Brent geese and wigeon. Once on the island, walkers can explore Lindisfarne Priory, a historic monastic site, and enjoy views across the dunes and coastline. The walk ends near the priory in this unique and wildlife-rich location.
