Cong to Clonbur Walk
The walk from Cong to Clonbur in County Mayo follows a scenic route through lakeside woodland, historic ruins, and peaceful countryside between two attractive villages on the Galway–Mayo border. Starting in Cong, the trail passes the ruins of Cong Abbey, a twelfth-century Augustinian monastery set beside the River Cong. The site is known for its fine stonework and tranquil surroundings, offering a glimpse into the area’s medieval past.
From the abbey, the route heads west through the wooded grounds of Ashford Castle, where forest trails wind close to Lough Corrib. The mix of broadleaf and conifer woodland provides shade and shelter, and the quiet trails are home to woodland birds and other wildlife.
Beyond the castle grounds, the route gradually climbs through forest that lead towards Clonbur.
The walk ends in the village of Clonbur, where stone buildings and quiet streets offer a contrast to the forested paths of the earlier sections. Combining history, lake scenery, and gentle woodland walking, the route between Cong and Clonbur is one of the most atmospheric in the west of Ireland.
