Kidwelly Canal Walk
This easy walk takes you along the Kidwelly Canal and the old railway line in Carmarthenshire, South Wales.
A walk along the canal begins at the car park at the Quay area, close to the River Gwendraeth and within sight of Kidwelly Castle. The path follows the old towpath of the canal, which is largely flat and suitable for most walkers. The route offers a quiet and peaceful experience, bordered by hedgerows, farmland, and woodland in parts.
The canal itself dates back to the 18th century and was originally built to serve the local coal and tinplate industries. Though no longer navigable, its remnants include stone bridges, lock structures and former industrial features, many of which are now overgrown or partially restored. Wildlife is a notable feature along the walk, with waterfowl such as mallards and moorhens common on the water, while kingfishers may be seen darting along the banks. In spring and summer, wildflowers line the edges of the path, and butterflies are often present in the more open stretches.
As the walk continues inland, it becomes increasingly rural, with views across surrounding fields and low hills. The route ends near the Pontyates area, where the canal once linked with the now-disused railway. While the walk can be done as an out-and-back route, it is also possible to explore connecting footpaths into the wider Gwendraeth Valley area.
