Kirkham Abbey to Howsham Mill Walk

3 miles (4.8 km)

Ordnance Survey Map Open Streetmap This walk takes you from the historic Kirkham Abbey to the nearby Howsham Mill in North Yorkshire.
You can follow a fine riverside footpath south along the River Derwent to reach the old mill. It's about a 3 mile walk along a fairly flat trail from the atmospheric abbey ruins.
At the end of the walk you will come to the Grade II listed 18th century watermill. Constructed around 1755 and believed to be the work of York architect John Carr, Howsham Mill served a dual purpose. Built in the Gothic Revival style, it functioned practically as a grist mill for grinding grains into flour while also being designed as an ornamental feature, or folly, within the landscaped grounds of Howsham Hall.
On the way you will pass a photogenic weir and Howsham Wood, where there some peaceful woodland trails to try.
