Lough Gowna and Derrycassin Woods Walk
This walk visits Derrycassin Woods on the shores of Lough Gowna in County Longford.
The woods offer a variety of trails that meander through a mix of mature broadleaf and conifer trees, creating a tranquil environment perfect for walking. The paths are well-maintained, making them suitable for all ages and fitness levels. Along the way, you’ll find picnic areas and scenic viewpoints overlooking Lough Gowna, providing plenty of opportunities to pause and take in the peaceful surroundings.
The area has a rich history, with the woods forming part of the Dopping-Hempenstall Estate in the 18th and 19th centuries. Remnants of this history, such as old estate walls and pathways, can still be seen within the woodland, adding an extra layer of interest to the walk. The trails are signposted, with routes ranging in length and difficulty to suit different preferences.
Flora in Derrycassin Woods includes oak, ash, birch, and Scots pine, along with an understorey of holly and hazel. Wildflowers such as primroses and wood anemones are common in spring, adding colour to the forest floor. Fungi thrive in the damp conditions, particularly in autumn, with various species visible on fallen logs and tree trunks. Fauna in the area includes birds such as robins, blackbirds, and wrens, while buzzards and herons can often be spotted near the water. Red squirrels are occasionally seen darting through the trees, and the shores of Lough Gowna provide a habitat for ducks, swans, and other waterfowl.
To continue your exploration of the local lakes head east to Lough Sheelin and Lough Ramor where there's lakeside trails and a Deer Park Forest to explore. The Mullaghmeen Forest White Walk and climb to the viewpoint at Mullaghmeen Hill are also nearby.

Church Lough, Lough Gowna. Church Lough is the name given to this bay of Lough Gowna which is one of the largest loughs in the Irish lakeland, and is divided between Counties Longford and Cavan. The lough which extends to 728 hectares in area is of extremely convoluted outline, consisting as it does of drowned drumlin country. The River Erne enters and leaves the eastern tip of the Lough. The waters of the lough offer prime coarse angling. Scrabby Island, covered by bushes, can be seen in the middle of the bay.
