Open Streetmap This short route follows the Northern Canal Walkway in Lowell, Massachusetts. The Northern Canal, completed in 1847, runs alongside the Merrimack River and is separated from it by a 36-foot-high granite barrier later known as the "Great River Wall."
The Walkway, which includes the Great River Wall, offers striking views of the Merrimack River, the canal, and the surrounding landscape.
The walkway is usually open from May 15 to October 15, depending on water levels and any construction work. During this season, it operates daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
