Mentmore Towers - Side Entrance. These spectacular gates are only the side entrance to the magnificent pile that is Mentmore Towers. The house, known usually simply as "Mentmore" or "The Mansion" was built for Baron Mayer de Rothschild between 1852 & 1854. It was subsequently the home of Lord Roseberry (a member of the Rothschild family by marriage). It was mooted at one time that Prince Charles might come to live here, but he decided on Highgrove instead. After a period where it was unused it was taken over by the "Natural Law Party" - the famous "Yogic Fliers". They, I believe, have now sold it on, and it is to become an exclusive 6* hotel. Much of the grounds to the south of the house now form Mentmore Golf Course.

Mentmore Towers. Sir Joseph Paxton and his son-in-law, George Henry Stokes designed the building in the 19th-century revival of late 16th and early 17th-century Elizabethan and Jacobean styles called Jacobethan. The house was designed for the banker and collector of fine art Baron Mayer de Rothschild as a country home, and as a display case for his collection of fine art. The mansion has been described as one of the greatest houses of the Victorian era.

Village houses. Mentmore is an estate village formerly belonging to the mansion of Mentmore Towers (see other photos for this square). Just about all the houses in this village are picturesque, the ones shown here being typical, though unlike many estate villages the houses are quite varied in design.

Gatehouse to Mentmore Towers. Looking like something out of a Fairy Tale, this is one of the gatehouses to the mansion of Mentmore Towers, though now a private house unconnected to its former rôle.
