Mweelrea Walk

6.5 miles (10.5 km)

Open Streetmap A walk up Mweelrea, the highest mountain in Connaught at 814 metres, offers a challenging but rewarding hike. Part of a massif of five connected peaks, this trail takes the northwestern approach from Silver Strand.
The trail starts by following the road away from the beach, then crosses boggy moorland where a clear path is often absent. Due to the mountain's steep crags and a lack of defined trails, a map and clear weather are essential for navigation and safety. The gradient gradually steepens as you climb the northern shoulder. From there, you'll follow the ridge to the summit, which is marked by a cairn.
The views from the top are spectacular and expansive, taking in the surrounding mountains, lakes, and the vast expanse of the Atlantic Ocean. The summit provides a truly panoramic vista of this rugged part of County Mayo.
You can continue your walking in the area by heading south east to Killary Fjord.
