West Windermere Way

3.42 miles (5.5 km)

Ordnance Survey Map Open Streetmap This new waymarked walk or cycle takes you along the south western side of Lake Windermere.
The route starts at Newby Bridge and heads north to Lakeside, Finsthwaite and Stott Park.
The purpose of the trail is to provide travel alternatives along the western shore of Windermere. It offers a safe walking route for families to enjoy the breathtaking views along the west side of Windermere and to access key visitor attractions in the area. By linking these attractions using the trail, people can extend their stay and explore the area without relying on a car. The route minimises road use and prioritises accessibility, making it suitable for walkers, families with young children and strollers, cyclists, and horse riders.
On the route you can also take a small detour to visit High Dam where you'll find two pretty tarns and more excellent views of the surrounding fells.
For a longer walk around the whole lake see the Windermere Way page.

Newby Bridge. In July 2022, contractors commenced work on the installation of raised boardwalks, a new railway bridge, surfacing, and fencing for the West Windermere Way. The first segment of the route opened in Spring 2023, just ahead of the Easter holidays. While some sections of the route run alongside the lake, it also extends from the lake to Stott Park Bobbin Mill and High Dam. The ultimate goal is for the route to integrate with the Windermere West Shore Way and Windermere Ferry line, pending funding and permissions. This would enable people to travel from Newby Bridge to Wray Castle using the network of trails. Once fully developed, the entire route will provide connectivity to buses, boats, and trains, offering sustainable transportation options in the heart of the Lake District.
