Wilbraham Fen Circular Walk

4.7 miles (7.5 km)

Ordnance Survey Map Open Streetmap This circular walk takes you around Wilbraham Fen near Cambridge.
The area is located near the villages of Great Wilbraham and Little Wilbraham, a few miles to the east of the famous university city.
The short but rewarding stroll meanders through a pocket of unique fenland habitat and includes a pleasant waterside section along the Little Wilbraham River. This nature reserve, managed by the Wildlife Trust, offers a peaceful escape with a focus on its diverse plant and insect life.
The walk follows a main circular trail that is generally flat and easy to navigate. It takes you along a raised path that winds through the fen, with glimpses of water-filled ditches and reedbeds. The area is a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), and it's particularly known for its rare plants, including various species of sedge and orchid, which thrive in the damp, chalky soil.
Wilbraham Fen is also a fantastic spot for wildlife watching. Keep an eye out for a variety of butterflies and dragonflies in the warmer months. The reedbeds and ditches provide a home for many birds, including warblers in the summer, and you might spot kingfishers or even water voles if you're lucky. The path is well-maintained but can be muddy after wet weather, so appropriate footwear is a good idea.
You can continue your walking in the area in the adjacent Fulbourn Fen.
