Woolacombe to Lee Bay Coastal Walk
This walk follows a section of the South West Coast Path from Woolacombe to Lee Bay. The route runs for 4.5 miles following the undulating cliff top path to Morte Point, Bull Point and Rockham Bay before finishing at Lee Bay.
Traversing some of the most dramatic Atlantic-facing cliffs in North Devon, this section of the South West Coast Path offers a rugged and exhilarating hiking experience. As you head north from the golden sands of Woolacombe, the trail leads you to the jagged, slate ridges of Morte Point. Known as the "Death Point" due to its history of shipwrecks, this dramatic headland is a prime spot for wildlife enthusiasts; it is one of the best locations in Devon to observe Atlantic grey seals hauled out on the rocks below. The path continues towards the iconic Bull Point Lighthouse, where the elevated vantage point provides panoramic views across the Bristol Channel towards the Welsh coast and Lundy Island.
The final leg of the journey descends into the secluded and picturesque Rockham Bay, famous for its rock pools and hidden beach, before reaching the "fuchsia village" of Lee Bay. This sheltered cove is a stark contrast to the wild, windswept heights of the earlier trail, characterized by its tranquil atmosphere and charming wooded valley. Along the way, the coastal heathland is a haven for birds of prey such as peregrine falcons and kestrels, while the seasonal wildflowers like sea pinks and heather paint the cliffs in vibrant hues. Arriving in Lee provides a peaceful conclusion to the 4.5-mile trek, capturing the raw natural beauty and maritime heritage of the North Devon Coast.
